Even flow

The family and I trekked over to Hobart last weekend. My brother-in-law and I braved the frigid Tasmanian weather by leaving our humble rental abode well before dawn in order to be prepared for that magic moment when daylight and blurry eyes join forces.

This is the first image taken on the shore of the Tasman Bridge in Hobart. As with the previous handful of photos, this one is in HDR-three images combined into one using PhotoMatix-and is one of several that worked out just the way I like it.

@jamesy: Thanks Jamesy. I hadn't taken images at -2 and +2 at such low lighting before this morning. One thing I did notice during the conversions was the poor level of colouration-particular with black zones-once I attempted to blend the three images. The one here had a suitable amount of light due to the slightly shorter exposure time (certainly not any more than 8 to 10 seconds) and therefore the various colours were able to maintain their integrity without being 'overblown' by the processing.

This may be the best HDR photo I have seen to date. The absence of 'halo-ing' above the edge of the bridge displays your superb processing! The bridge and lights, the reflections and the light on the rocks are all wonderful!

@Judy: Oh, Judy...You know how to sneak your way into my 'favourite comments list' don't you. :)

In all fairness to the people who know what they're doing after the image has been taken, most of the outstanding work was done by the program - PhotoMatix - with moi merely tinkering with the output to a state where I was personally satisfied with it.

I'm a land lover and a sea lover and a gravity lover which is why I couldn't possibly have altered the original element too much; just enough to give it a tick of approval and perhaps even a personalised touch. For the record, the most difficult part (for me) was introducing some light to the rocks.

The use of the HDR is effective here. I'm often not a fan of HDR. I think it can look overdone and cartoon-ish. This is subtle and while I can still tell it is HDR it is not overdone.

@Laurie: Thanks Laurie. I think I know what you mean regarding the 'overdone' element to this form. From my limited experience with this type of processing I can safely say that it's easy to get carried away. However, when landscape/seascape is involved, I'll be the first to raise my hand at the thought of going too far. After all, I have yet to photograph a landscape on another planet and cannot see the point in pretending to be anywhere other than good ole Earth.

i love the milky texture of the water, and the colours captured.. the bridge gives this kinda rather typical photo it's interest. i really like your HDRs, very subtle with enough ommph. i'll try some myself one day!

@Stu: Thanks Stuey. I'm reluctant to agree with you-seeing as I've seen what professionals are capable of; there's always a shitload of post production work to be done that I have yet to master-yet I will accept your compliment with the level of dignity and grace that my makers (mamma and pappa Kertes) gave me. This was an exceptionally enjoyable shoot. Perhaps we can chat about it in the near future over the ether as we sip from our virtual Chardonnays?
